Join West Virginian Adam Booth as he tells Mr. Patches, an original story of the 1990s from his Appalachian 20th Century series. With a goal to illuminate the Appalachian experience over the course of a hundred years, Adam's Appalachian 20th Century is a cycle of original program-length neo-traditional stories about our people and their situations, incorporating two traditional tales, actual historical events, and regional culture and folklore.
A description of Mr. Patches: A small-town’s neighborhood school is saved from demolition when it is retrofitted into low-income assisted living apartments for senior citizens. Hope is a nurse who works in the very same school building she attended as a girl. It is there she discovers her new patient is Mr. Patches, the mesmerizing school storyteller from her childhood. Hope slowly unwinds his secret past in this tale set in the present with vivid flashbacks to the 1990s in Appalachia and the 1940s in Europe.
The Cherry Arts Inc: Workshop
Since the 1890s, the motion picture has grown to be a dominant force in storytelling, but how many creatives in other art forms employ the techniques of this medium? Many of us have vivid memories of favorite movie scenes, music, character voices, or even single lines of dialogue - and despite not having seen some of those movies in years, the elements are still fresh in our minds. Wouldn't you want your stories to have such lasting impact? This workshop introduces to spoken storytellers, visual thinkers, and aural creatives some introductory elements of storytelling culled from cinematic techniques. Come prepared to participate and explore how filmic components can be used to enrich, strengthen, and transform our storytelling experiences.
